Most roundups rank campgrounds by amenity checklists scraped from a federal database. That's how you end up towing a 38 ft fifth wheel down Gilman Road toward a site that maxes out at 24 feet of usable pad.

We camp here. What follows is ranked by what actually matters on arrival day: pad length, shade at 4pm, ramp usability at low water, and whether your brakes will still be happy at the bottom of the grade.

Insider rule: On Shasta, "lake view" and "lake access" are two different products at the same price. Always check the elevation gain between your pad and the water.

The water-level problem nobody mentions

Shasta swings 60+ vertical feet between a wet May and a dry September. That single fact reorders the entire campground ranking. The shaded McCloud Arm sites that are perfect in June can strand your boat trailer 400 yards from the waterline by Labor Day.

• Cell signal is measured on Verizon at the pad, mid-afternoon, in summer.

Booking windows that work

USFS sites open six months out at 7:00 AM Pacific. Waterfront pads at Bailey Cove and Hirz Bay are gone inside four minutes on summer Fridays. Set an alarm, have your rig length pre-saved, and always have a second-choice loop ready.
