Big Rig Guide: Where a 40ft Fifth Wheel Actually Fits on Shasta Lake
Turn radii, grade percentages, low limbs and the exact pads that swallow a 40-footer without a three-point turn.
The listed max length is not the usable length
Federal listings measure the gravel pad. They don't measure the tree you have to swing around to reach it, or the neighbor's truck that will be parked in your approach line.
The three numbers that decide your weekend
- Approach angle — anything steeper than 8% with a long rear overhang means dragging your bumper.
- Turn radius at the loop entrance — the single most common reason big rigs bail out.
- Pad cross-slope — a 4-inch drop across 8 feet eats your entire leveling block stack.
Field note: We've put a 40 ft toy hauler into Antlers site 34 with the truck still hitched. We could not get a 34 ft travel trailer into the Bailey Cove upper loop without unhitching.
Rank order for rigs over 35 feet
Mountain Gate and Fawndale Oaks are the no-drama answers: concrete pull-throughs, 50 amp, no grade. Antlers is the best public option. Jones Valley works if you drop the boat first.
Everything on the McCloud Arm is a small-rig proposition. Do not let a photo of emerald water talk you into a road your wheelbase can't handle.
