Getting there

From Redding, take Interstate 5 north about five miles to the Mountain Gate exit and follow Holiday Road to the park at 14161 Holiday Road, Redding, CA 96003. From the north, take I-5 south to the same exit. This is the easiest arrival of any campground on the Shasta corridor. The approach is flat, paved, wide, lit at night, and under a mile from the freeway ramp with no grade and no blind corners. There is no reason to stage a big rig or unhook before arriving, and a 70-foot combination can be at the pad within five minutes of leaving the interstate. Nothing else covered on this site is that straightforward — the Forest Service campgrounds up the McCloud and Pit arms involve miles of narrow two-lane with drop-offs, and several of them cannot take a large rig at all. Shasta Dam is about a fifteen-minute drive west via Shasta Dam Boulevard through Project City, and the Centimudi public ramp sits below it. Redding, with full supermarkets, hospitals, hardware and RV service, is five miles south.

Mountain Gate is the park you use when the trip is about getting somewhere rather than being somewhere. It sits at the Mountain Gate exit off Interstate 5, five miles north of Redding and a short drive from Shasta Dam, on 110 full-hookup sites with 20, 30 and 50-amp service on poured cement pads. That last detail matters more than it sounds: cement pads and a fenced dog park put this in a different category from the gravel-and-dust Forest Service campgrounds up the arms, and they are the reason long-stay guests keep coming back to it through the winter. The site classes are worth understanding before you book, because the rate card is built around them. Standard back-in is the entry price; standard pull-through costs about two dollars more; premium pull-through and deluxe back-in another two; deluxe pull-through sits at the top. The spread from bottom to top is about ten dollars a night, which is small enough that if you are towing anything it is usually worth buying the pull-through and not thinking about it again. The rate card also names specific site blocks for monthly stays — sites 38 to 54 and 104 to 116 at one price, 80 to 94 at another — which tells you the park is organised around long-stay guests in defined areas rather than scattering them through the nightly sites. Two rules catch people out. The park does not permit car camping, full stop, so a sedan and a tent is not a booking here. And the extras add up in a way the headline rate does not show: an extra vehicle or boat is $15 a day, dogs are $5 a day each to a maximum of two, there is a $6.50 service fee on the reservation and 10% transient occupancy tax on top of nightly and weekly stays. A family arriving with a tow car, a boat and two dogs is paying meaningfully more than the sticker price. There is a conflict in the published rig capacity we have not resolved. RVezy lists maximum RV length at 70 feet; the Coast Resorts directory lists 67 feet for the same park. We have gone with 70 as the higher-confidence figure and flagged the disagreement rather than hide it. Either way this is genuine big-rig ground, which almost nothing on the lake itself can claim. The amenity list is the full commercial set: saltwater pool, cable TV, free Wi-Fi, laundry, bathhouses, general store, propane, firewood, dump station, playground, grills, and RV storage. The park is managed by Pacifica Companies rather than an owner-operator, which shows in how the place runs — consistent, priced by class, policies in writing.

Mountain Gate is technically in the Shasta Lake corridor but it is not a lake campground, and the distinction shapes everything about a stay here. You cannot see the water, you cannot walk to it, and there is no ramp. What you get instead is a base camp with pavement, full services and a supermarket five miles away, from which the whole northern end of the state is a day trip: Shasta Dam and Centimudi in fifteen minutes, Whiskeytown in half an hour, the Sacramento Arm ramps in forty minutes, Lassen Volcanic in about ninety, and Mount Shasta an hour north up I-5. That makes it the practical choice in two situations. The first is a long stay — the monthly rates, cement pads, laundry, dog park and proximity to Redding services are built for people parked for weeks, and the park is visibly organised around them. The second is shoulder and winter season, when most of the lakeside campgrounds are closed, drawn down or simply unpleasant, and a full-hookup site with reliable power and a saltwater pool is a much better proposition than a dry site on a receding shoreline. The trade is atmosphere and noise. Interstate 5 is close, and freeway hum is part of the experience at this location. Anyone coming for quiet water and pine should be looking at Lakeshore East, Nelson Point or Hirz Bay and accepting the dry camping that goes with them. Weather here is Redding weather, not mountain weather. Summer afternoons in the Sacramento Valley regularly run past 100 degrees F and the valley heat reaches this far north; 50-amp service and working air conditioning are not a luxury in July, they are the reason to be in a park like this rather than at a Forest Service site with no power. Winters are mild and wet, snow at roughly 1,000 feet is rare, and the park stays open year round. Because the park is on private ground rather than National Forest land, Shasta-Trinity Forest Orders do not automatically govern it the way they do the agency campgrounds and the lakeside resorts operating under special-use permits. Fire rules here are the park own policy and Shasta County rules. That is a real difference in a restricted year, though it cuts both ways — the park sets its own policy and it may be stricter than the Forest Order, not looser. On launching: Mountain Gate has no ramp of its own and the lake is a drive rather than a walk. Centimudi below Shasta Dam is the nearest public launch, reached via Shasta Dam Boulevard through Project City — a multi-lane paved ramp that stays usable through a wider range of lake levels than most, which makes it the fallback for the whole southern end of the lake when the arms draw down. Packers Bay is the next option north, roughly 7 miles straight-line up I-5, and Jones Valley serves the Pit River Arm to the east. If launching a boat every morning is the point of the trip, a lakeside park saves you the tow; if you want hookups, pavement and a supermarket, this is the trade you are making.
