From Redding, take Interstate 5 north roughly ten miles to the Fawndale Road exit, then follow Fawndale Road east a short distance to the park at 15015 Fawndale Road, Redding, CA 96003. From the north, take I-5 south to the same exit. The approach is short, paved and gently graded — a normal rural two-lane rather than a mountain road. There are no switchbacks, no drop-offs and no low clearances between the freeway and the gate, which puts Fawndale in a small group of Shasta corridor campgrounds a first-time RV renter can reach without anxiety. Compare that with Hirz Bay or Moore Creek up the McCloud Arm, where the last several miles are narrow two-lane cut into a hillside. Shasta Lake is about a mile and a half away but there is no direct access from the park — reaching the water means driving, and the nearest public ramp is Packers Bay off I-5. Redding, with supermarkets, hospitals, hardware and RV service, is ten miles south. Shasta Dam is around twenty minutes, Whiskeytown about forty.

Fawndale Oaks is the quiet one. It sits about ten miles north of Redding off Interstate 5, a mile and a half short of Shasta Lake, on 53 sites under oak cover — a small, long-established, owner-run park rather than a corporate operation, and it feels like it. The mix is unusual for the corridor: full-hookup RV sites with 30 and 50-amp service and pull-throughs, tent sites, a rustic rental cabin, and a 28-foot rental trailer parked on site for people who arrive without a rig at all. That last option is genuinely useful and almost nothing else on this corridor offers it. What sets Fawndale apart from the other I-5 parks is the group infrastructure. The park runs a meeting room with a full kitchen alongside the rec room, store and pool. That combination — group facilities plus a pool plus cabins plus tent sites — makes it one of the few places in the Shasta corridor that can host a family reunion or a club rally where not everyone is towing. If you have been trying to organise a group where half the party has an RV and the other half needs a roof, this is the shape of park that solves it. The amenity list is solid for a small park: camp store, propane refills, hot showers, laundry, restrooms, potable water, Wi-Fi, playground, game room, basketball and volleyball, and secure RV storage. Pets are welcome on leash, with breed restrictions the park applies at its discretion. Quiet hours run 10 pm to 7 am and checkout is at noon. The honest weakness of this page is price. Fawndale Oaks takes bookings direct and publishes its own seasonal rates, and the third-party directories carrying figures for it are years out of date and contradict one another. We have left the rate blank rather than repeat a number we cannot stand behind. The same goes for rig length: no source we can find publishes a maximum for this park, and unlike the lake campgrounds where the Forest Service publishes hard limits, there is nothing official to cite. If you are running anything over about 35 feet, call before you book — the park has pull-throughs, but pull-through does not automatically mean long.

Fawndale sits in the transition band between the Sacramento Valley floor and the Shasta foothills, in oak and grey pine rather than the conifer cover you get further up the lake. At roughly 1,150 feet it catches valley heat in summer — Redding routinely runs past 100 degrees F in July and August, and Fawndale is close enough to feel it — but the oak canopy over the sites makes a real difference to how that heat lands, and 50-amp service means air conditioning is an option rather than a hope. Positioning-wise this is a Redding-gateway park, not a lake park, and it should be chosen on that basis. The lake is a drive. What you get instead is quiet, shade, a pool, a store, group facilities and a ten-minute run to a full-sized city. For a family basing a week in Northern California it is a reasonable centre of operations: Shasta Dam and Centimudi twenty minutes away, the Sacramento Arm ramps around half an hour north, Whiskeytown about forty minutes west, Lassen Volcanic National Park roughly ninety minutes east, Mount Shasta and Castle Crags an hour north, and McArthur-Burney Falls about an hour and a half north-east. The park is open year round, which matters on this corridor. Most of the Forest Service campgrounds on the lake close or go to reduced service in the off-season, and the ones that stay open are dry. Between October and April, a full-hookup site in oak shade ten miles from a supermarket is a considerably better proposition than a dry pad on a drawn-down shoreline. Winters here are mild and wet; snow at this elevation is uncommon. Because Fawndale Oaks sits on private ground rather than National Forest land, Shasta-Trinity Forest Orders do not automatically apply to it the way they do to the agency campgrounds and to the lakeside resorts holding Forest Service special-use permits. Fire rules here are the park own policy plus Shasta County restrictions. In a heavy fire year that can mean the rules differ from the campground five miles up the freeway — check with the park rather than assuming the Forest Order answer applies. On launching: the park describes itself as a mile and a half from Shasta Lake, which is accurate as the crow flies but is not a walk to a launch. The nearest public ramp is Packers Bay, about 2.6 miles straight-line to the north-west and reached from I-5 at the Packers Bay exit — a multi-lane paved launch on the main body of the lake that handles trailered boats well through most of the season. Bailey Cove is the next option up the McCloud Arm, roughly 3.9 miles straight-line, and Centimudi at Shasta Dam covers the southern end. As with every ramp on this lake, the usable end of the pavement moves with lake level: what launches easily in June can need a long back-down by October. Bailey Cove Road and the Bailey Cove campground road are closed by Forest Order 14-25-11 from Sept 4 through Dec 31, 2026.
