Getting there

From Redding, take Interstate 5 north to exit 698, Salt Creek Road and Gilman Road. Gregory Creek Road starts at the interchange, and the park is at 19765 Gregory Creek Rd, a short paved drive from the freeway. From the north, take I-5 south to the same exit. The park asks guests to follow the directions in their booking confirmation rather than their phone's GPS, which it says sometimes sends rigs past the best turn or onto side streets that don't suit big rigs. It describes Gregory Creek Road as wide enough for big rigs but not a highway: some curves, gentle grades, and soft or narrow shoulders in spots. Arrive in daylight on a first visit if you can. Exit 698 is not the main Lakehead exit. If your navigation sends you to exit 702 and Lakeshore Drive, you are four miles north of the park.

Local deep dive

Trail Inn is the RV park on Gregory Creek Road, a short paved drive off I-5 at exit 698, the Salt Creek and Gilman Road interchange about four miles south of the main Lakehead exit. It changed hands recently. The new owners describe themselves as RV travelers who took it over to fix the basics: they say sites are being regraded and leveled, water, power and sewer are being refreshed section by section, the Wi-Fi has been upgraded, and signage and lighting inside the park are getting better. Directory listings and older camper reviews were written before that work started, so expect some of what you read elsewhere to be out of date. The park sits under pines rather than on the shoreline, which is the trade most people make here: shade and quiet at night, then a short drive to the water. It has full-hookup RV sites in both pull-through and back-in layouts, tent sites, and a small but growing number of tiny-home cabins, one of which is booked through Airbnb. There are shared restrooms with showers, Wi-Fi, an on-site store with cold drinks and basics, and propane refills for RV tanks and grill bottles. Leashed dogs are welcome, and the park describes itself as ADA accessible. **What the park does not publish is the part big-rig owners care about most: a site count, a maximum length or an amperage list.** Directories fill the gap but disagree. The Dyrt lists a 50-foot maximum with 50-amp service, while Campendium lists 70 feet with both 30 and 50 amp. We publish the lower figure. The park's booking page asks you to send your rig length and party size, and the owners say they match each rig to a site that fits, which is the safer route for anything over 40 feet. Booking is direct, through the park's online system or by phone at (530) 238-8533, with nightly, weekly and monthly stays. No rate card is posted online.

Exit 698 sits between the two halves of the Sacramento Arm's camping. Four miles north is the Lakehead cluster: Antlers, Lakeshore Drive and the resorts along it. Just south are the Salt Creek and Nelson Point areas on the water, and O'Brien and the Packers Bay ramp are a few miles further down I-5. Gilman Road leaves the same interchange and runs east toward the McCloud Arm and Hirz Bay, so this is one of the few spots where both arms are an easy drive. The trade-off is the usual one at this end of the lake. Being close to the freeway makes arrival easy and keeps fuel, food and groceries a few minutes away, but you are not camped on the shoreline. As Shasta draws down through summer and fall, the nearest usable ramp changes: Antlers closes once the lake drops below 992 ft, and the Sugarloaf low-water ramp, about the same distance away, takes over. Expect Shasta foothill weather at roughly 1,200 feet: hot, dry summers that push past 100 degrees F on the worst afternoons, and mild, wet winters. The pine shade the park leans on matters most in July and August. On fire: the park is private land, and we have not found a document that settles whether Shasta-Trinity Forest Orders reach it. Ask at check-in what the current campfire rules are.

Questions people ask

How big an RV fits at Trail Inn RV & Campground?

The park doesn't publish a maximum. The Dyrt lists 50 feet and Campendium lists 70 feet, so we show 50. The park's booking page asks for your rig length and party size, and the owners say they match each rig to a site that fits, so send your length before you book, especially for anything over 40 feet.

Does Trail Inn have 50-amp service?

Directory listings from The Dyrt and Campendium both list 50-amp service, and Campendium lists 30 amp as well. The park's own pages say every site has power, water and the essential connections but don't break down amperage, so confirm 50 amp for your site when you book.

How far is Trail Inn from a Shasta Lake boat ramp?

There is no ramp on site. The Antlers and Sugarloaf public ramps are each about 2.4 miles away in a straight line. Sugarloaf is the low-water ramp that takes over when the lake drops below 992 ft and Antlers closes. Hirz Bay on the McCloud Arm is about 9 miles up Gilman Road from the same freeway exit.

What does Trail Inn RV & Campground cost?

No rate card is posted online. The park offers nightly, weekly and monthly stays and quotes rates through its booking system or by phone at (530) 238-8533. Campendium's last camper-reported figure, $33 a night in November 2023, predates the new owners, so we don't publish it as a rate.

Is Trail Inn open year-round?

The Dyrt and Campendium both list it as open all year, and the owners describe the park as a base throughout the year. Confirm winter dates when you book.

Are dogs allowed at Trail Inn?

Yes. The park says leashed dogs are welcome.
