What is the point of this?
The Nemo Wagontop 8P is the largest tent in the Wagontop series, and the one we’re looking at today is the updated 2020 version. This series has been a popular choice for campers for a while, and this latest version has some great improvements. They’ve added new colors and made the floor even tougher than the older Nemo Wagontop 6. You might even find both versions available if you shop around!
What makes this tent unique is its tunnel-like shape combined with a special pole design that lets it stand up on its own without needing stakes. Inside, there’s a divider with a zipper down the middle, creating two separate rooms.
The Wagontop 8P also cleverly mixes different wall types. One room is a screen room with mesh walls and a rain fly to keep you dry, while the other room has solid walls for more privacy and weather protection. This design is so versatile it’s made it onto my list of the best screen room tents. In the image below, you can see the tent with the rain fly rolled up, showing off how open and airy the mesh room is.
This tent makes it easy to get in and out and enjoy the views, with two big doors, one at each end. It also has two large windows with mesh and panels that you can adjust from inside for privacy and airflow.
To see how the tent is laid out and how the company suggests using the space, check out the floor plan below. Section D shows you where the vestibule is.
This tent is built like a cathedral! It’s super tall with steep walls, giving you tons of headroom and making it feel extra spacious inside. The highest point is 80 inches (203 cm) tall, so you won’t feel cramped at all. The picture below shows just how roomy it is inside, especially when it comes to shoulder space. If you like having lots of room to move around in your tent, the Nemo Wagontop 8P is a great option.
Who is it for?
How many people will it really fit?
Even though it says it fits 8 people, the floor plan shows it might be a bit crowded with that many. You get 124.9 ft² (11.6 m²) of space inside, which works out to 15.6 ft² (1.45 m²) for each person. There’s also a vestibule with 26.9 ft² (2.5 m²) of covered space for your stuff, but to be comfortable, you might want to have fewer than 8 people.
If you need more space, Nemo makes something called the Victory Screenhouse. You can set it up next to the tent and use it as a place to eat or hang out.
What about weather?
This is a 3-season tent, meaning you can use it in spring, summer, and fall. It’ll keep you dry even when it rains, but because it’s so big (almost 6 meters long and over 2 meters tall), strong winds could be a problem.
Is it heavy?
Yes, this tent is a bit heavy at 30 lb 3 oz (13.7 kg). That’s because of the special poles that let it stand up on its own and the strong fabric it’s made from. It’s also pretty big when it’s packed up, so it’s best for camping trips where you can drive right up to your campsite.
Materials
Poles:
This tent uses a unique pole system with three main poles. Two of these poles are Y-shaped with hub components at each end, as shown in the image below. These hubs fit into designated holes in the tent’s structure, creating a freestanding design.
The third pole is a simple loop that runs along the center of the tent. All poles are shock-corded, which means they’re connected by an elastic cord, making them easier to assemble. Despite the seemingly complex structure, setting up the tent is fairly straightforward with a little practice. The poles are made of durable aluminum and have diameters of 14.5 mm and 12.8 mm.
The fabric
This tent boasts a combination of tough fabrics built for the outdoors. The canopy is made from 75D polyester with a polyurethane (PU) coating and a water resistance rating of 1500 mm. But the real star is the floor, made from extra-durable 300D polyester with the same PU coating. While the floor’s water resistance rating isn’t the highest, it’s incredibly tough and built to withstand wear and tear. You won’t find many tents with such a rugged floor!
