These days, you can find lots of family camping tents with doors that open like a regular door! They come in different sizes, usually big enough for 6 to 10 people. You can even find ones made for different weather, including winter camping.
What is a hinged door on a tent?
Imagine a tent door that opens just like the door to your house! These special doors have poles around the edges to make them strong and sturdy, usually in a D-shape. The door swings open on a pole that acts like a hinge.
You usually find these cool doors on tents with tall, straight walls, like a cabin. But sometimes you can even find them on dome-shaped tents!
Why would you want a tent with a hinged door?
Why are these doors so great?
They make getting in and out of your tent super easy! It feels just like opening the door at home. Plus, they usually have Velcro straps to keep them closed, so you don’t have to mess with zippers all the time.
What about when it rains?
Most of these doors have an extra flap to keep the rain out. This flap can be a little annoying to deal with sometimes. The top part of the flap is attached to the tent wall, so rain runs over the door. The bottom part of the flap is attached to the door itself. This helps keep the rain from getting inside.

What kind of tents are on this list?
- Different shapes: You’ll find tents shaped like cabins, domes, and tunnels.
- For all kinds of weather: Most are for summer camping, but some can be used in spring and fall, and a few are even made for winter!
- Different sizes: There are tents with one room, two rooms, and even three rooms.
- Special features: Some of these tents are “dark rest tents,” which means they block out sunlight to help you sleep better.
1. Coleman Elite Sundome Tent with LED Light System
This tent is shaped like a dome, with two poles that cross in the middle to hold it up. This makes it strong against wind, kind of like the way an airplane wing cuts through the air. The poles are made of fiberglass, which is okay, but I wouldn’t put too much weight on them. It says it fits 6 people, but because of the dome shape, it might feel a bit cramped inside.
The tent has two doors, both with awnings to protect you from the rain. One door is a cool hinged door that opens like a regular door (you can see it in the picture). The other door is a normal zippered door.
One of the best things about this tent is its built-in lights! They’re super bright LEDs that hang from the ceiling. You can choose between bright light, dim light, or a nightlight setting using a button on the wall. The lights run on batteries (either regular D batteries or rechargeable ones), and they last a long time: 26 hours on bright, 65 hours on dim, and 81 hours as a nightlight!
2. Coleman Tenaya Lake 6-Person Fast Pitch Cabin with Cabinets
This tent is shaped like a cabin, with tall walls and a flat roof. It’s really easy to set up because the poles are already attached to the roof – that’s what “quick pitch” means. The poles are color-coded, so you know exactly how to put them together. It also has special clips that make it even faster to set up.
This tent has two rooms! There’s a divider in the middle so you can have some privacy. It also has two built-in closets at the back with shelves for storing your things. You could even use them as little rooms for small pets if you want! Just remember that you can only get to the closets from inside the tent.
The rain cover only goes over the top part of the tent because there are big windows on the sides. The door is one of those cool hinged doors that opens like a regular door. It has a handle and Velcro straps to keep it closed during the day, and you can zip it up at night. It’s the only door though, which isn’t ideal for a tent this size.
Speaking of size, this tent might feel a bit cramped with the number of people they say it fits. You’ll probably be more comfortable if you only use it for half that many people. It does have some nice features though, like a place to plug in electronics and some small pockets on the walls.
The carrying bag has wheels, which is good because this tent weighs over 30 pounds!
One more thing: there’s another version of this tent with a big closet at the back instead of two small ones. So, you have options!
Specifications:
- Space: It says it fits 6 people, but it might be a bit cozy with that many. It has two rooms: a main room and two small closet areas.
- Size: The main room is about 13 feet long and 7 feet wide. The closets are each about 2 feet by 2 feet. All together, the floor space is about 99 square feet.
- Weight: This tent weighs about 33 pounds, which is like a big bag of dog food. It’s not super heavy, but you probably won’t want to carry it too far.
- Warranty: It comes with a 1-year warranty, so you’re protected if anything goes wrong.
3. Coleman WeatherMaster 6-Person Screened Tent
I’ve written a whole separate review about this tent, so here’s just a quick summary:
It’s a big tent with two rooms. The first room is a screened-in porch area – great for enjoying the outdoors without bugs! The second room is a regular tent area with a floor to keep you off the ground.
This tent has one of those cool doors that opens like a regular door. It’s shaped like a “D” and has poles that make it strong and sturdy. You can see it in the picture!
Specifications:
- Space for people: It says it fits 6 people, but keep in mind that includes the screened-in porch area.
- Size: The tent is about 11 feet long and 9 feet wide. The floor space is about 99 square feet in total.
- Weight: This tent weighs about 32 pounds. That’s about the same as a medium-sized dog!
- Packed size: When it’s packed up, it’s a little over 41 inches long and 10 inches wide. Think of it like a long, narrow duffel bag.
Coleman recently updated this tent to include a built-in LED lighting system. You can find it by searching for the Coleman Elite WeatherMaster Screened 6-Person Tent With Built-In LED Light.
4. Russian Bear Winter Tent With Stove Included
This tent is special – it’s made for camping in cold weather! You can see it on my list of cold-weather tents (just click the link). It looks different from other tents and has some unique features. It’s also super easy to set up – it pops open kind of like an umbrella, and one person can do it all by themselves from inside the tent!
This tent is built for serious winter camping! It even comes with a wood stove to keep you warm inside. It’s definitely expensive, but that’s what you have to expect for a tent that can handle tough winter conditions.
Another cool thing about this tent is its door. It’s a hinged door that you can actually take completely off if you want! You can see it in the picture. It’s different from any other tent door on my list.
Specifications:
- Space: It’s designed for 6 people.
- Shape and size: It’s round and measures about 11.4 feet across. The floor space is about 102 square feet.
- Warmth: It comes with a wood stove to keep you cozy in the cold!
The Russian-Bear Hot Tent is perfect for groups of up to 5. And you can add a stove to your order if you need one!
5. Coleman Bristol 8P Modified Dome with Hinged Door
This tent was picked because it has a cool door that opens like a regular door, but it also has other great features! It has good ventilation with 3 windows and an awning (a small roof over the door), and it’s not too expensive. The shape is like a dome with extra space, and it has a built-in place to run an electrical cord inside.
It weighs about 28 pounds and has 112 square feet of space inside. The poles are made of fiberglass, and the fabric is polyester. It’s made with Coleman’s special “WeatherTec” system, which means the seams are sealed up to keep water out.
6. Coleman Evanston 8-Person Family Dome Tent
This tent might look small, but it actually has more floor space than the Coleman Octagon 8 (the tent pictured below). That’s because it’s shaped like a dome, which is wide at the bottom but doesn’t have as much headroom as a cabin-style tent.
The dome shape is made with three poles, and one of them creates a small awning over the door. This awning keeps the rain off the door and also acts as a support for the hinged door, allowing it to swing open easily. There’s another small awning at the back of the tent covering a mesh window.
Inside, you’ll find a place to plug in electronics and a few small pockets for storing your things. They say it can fit 8 people, but that’s probably only if you’re using really small sleeping bags like backpackers do. For regular camping, it’s probably best for 5 people or fewer.
Specifications:
- Space: It says it fits 8 people, but remember that it’s a dome shape, so it might feel a bit crowded with that many.
- Size: The tent is 12 feet long and 12 feet wide, making it a nice square shape. The floor space is 144 square feet, which is quite roomy!
- Weight: It weighs about 24 pounds. That’s about the same as a small child!
- Packed size: When it’s packed up, it’s about 28 inches long and 10 inches wide. It’s kind of like a long, thin suitcase.
- Warranty: It comes with a 1-year warranty, just in case anything goes wrong.
7. Coleman Jenny Lake 8 Tent
This Coleman Jenny Lake 8 tent is a great choice for families! It has two doors, including one of those cool hinged doors that opens like a regular door. It also has a handy closet at the back for storing your gear.
Inside, you’ll find two separate rooms and a total of seven windows, so you’ll have plenty of light and fresh air. Some of the windows even have a special “auto-roll” feature that makes them super easy to open and close – I haven’t seen that on any other tent!
Like many Coleman tents, this one is designed for quick and easy setup. It also has a port for bringing electrical power inside. It weighs about 41 pounds, which is a bit heavy, but it has a spacious 121 square feet of floor space. The poles are made of a combination of steel and fiberglass for extra strength.
8. Coleman Montana 8-Person Tent with Hinged Door
I wanted to show you this picture of the Montana 8 tent without the rain cover so you can see how it’s built. It’s shaped like a dome with extra space, and the cool hinged door is on the main dome part of the tent.
This tent has only one room, and it’s not freestanding, which means you’ll need to stake it down to keep it upright. It’s supposed to be good for three seasons (spring, summer, and fall), but the rain cover doesn’t cover the whole tent, so I wouldn’t use it in stormy weather. While I love the hinged door, it would be better if it had another door, especially since it’s a pretty big tent.
Specification:
- Space: It says it fits 8 people, but remember it has a long, narrow shape.
- Size: The tent is 16 feet long and 7 feet wide. The floor space is about 112 square feet.
- Weight: It weighs about 24.5 pounds. That’s about the same weight as a bowling ball!
- Packed size: When it’s packed up, it’s about 27.5 inches long and 9 inches wide. It’s kind of like a long, thin suitcase.
9. Coleman Octagon 98 Full Fly Tent – Coleman Signature
This tent has a really cool design! It’s shaped like an octagon (that’s a shape with eight sides), and the poles connect in the middle like a spider web. This makes the tent strong and able to stand up on its own. It also has a big rain cover that goes over the whole tent, so you’ll stay dry even in a downpour. When the weather is nice, you can unzip the rain cover and enjoy the view through the big mesh windows.
The tent has two doors and a divider in the middle, so you can create two separate rooms. Each room has its own door, which is really convenient. Even though it says it fits 8 people, it’s probably best for 4 people if you want to be comfortable. It has lots of headroom and is a great choice for camping in spring, summer, or fall.
Want to see how to set up this tent and put the poles in the door? Check out this video!
Specifications:
- Space: It’s designed for 8 people.
- Shape and size: It’s shaped like an octagon (a shape with 8 sides) and measures about 13 feet across. The floor space is about 122 square feet.
- Weight: It weighs almost 50 pounds. That’s pretty heavy, so you’ll want to have a car to help you carry it to your campsite..
10. L.L.Bean Acadia 8-Person Tent
This tent has a really cool door! It’s different from any other tent I’ve seen. It has two poles that make it extra strong, and it uses magnets to close easily. I even put it on my list of the best tents with magnetic doors!
The tent itself is tall and spacious, with plenty of headroom (almost 7 feet!). It’s shaped like a cabin and has two separate rooms, making it perfect for families.
You’ll also find some handy features like a place to plug in electronics and a storage loft to keep your gear organized. It weighs about 37 pounds and can fit up to 8 people. The total floor space inside is about 120 square feet.
11. Coleman Hampton 9 Person Tent
“Cabin tents” are shaped like, well, cabins! They have straight walls, flat roofs, and lots of headroom, just like a little house. This tent is a perfect example of a cabin tent. The hinged door adds to that cabin-like feeling, making it seem like you’re stepping into a real room.
The tent is big enough to fit two queen-size air mattresses comfortably, with space left over. But even though it says it fits 9 people, that’s probably only if you’re using small sleeping bags like backpackers do. It’s best to think of this tent as being for a smaller group.
There’s a divider in the middle so you can create two separate rooms. It also has a place to plug in electronics, which is handy. Just remember that this tent is made for summer camping. It’s not strong enough for cold weather or snow. You’ll also need to use the stakes to hold it down because the boxy shape can make it unstable in strong winds. (I even saw a mistake on Amazon saying that this tent sets itself up instantly – that’s not true!)
Specification:
- Space: It says it fits 9 people, but it’s probably best for a smaller group if you want to be comfortable.
- Size: The tent is 14 feet long and 10 feet wide. The floor space is 140 square feet, which is pretty big!
- Weight: It weighs about 31 pounds. That’s about the same weight as a medium-sized dog!
- Packed size: When it’s packed up, it’s about 37 inches long and 12 inches wide. It’s kind of like a long, narrow suitcase.
12. Coleman Cabin Tent with Instant Setup
- Dark Room Technology reduces heat for comfortable rest at any time
- WeatherTec system’s welded corners and inverted seams for superior water resistance
- Included rainfly offers extra weather protection
- Reflective guy lines for greater visibility at night
- E-Port makes it easy to bring electrical power inside
This 10-person tent is on my list because it has two doors, and one of them is a cool hinged door that opens like a regular door! But that’s not all it has going for it. This tent is super easy to set up – you can have it ready to go in just one minute! It also blocks out sunlight so you can sleep in longer.
It’s shaped like a cabin, with tall walls and a flat roof. The rain cover is pretty small, but it has huge windows on the sides to let in lots of light and fresh air. There’s a divider in the middle so you can create two separate rooms.
This tent weighs about 42 pounds, which is pretty heavy. But it has a lot of space inside – 140 square feet! And it’s tall too, with a ceiling over 6 and a half feet high. When it’s packed up, it’s about 42 inches long and 9 inches wide.
13. Coleman WeatherMaster 10-Person Tent
- Spacious Interior: Cabin-like tent fits up to 10 people or 3 queen style air beds
- Weather-Protected: Features WeatherTec system with patented welded floors and inverted seams to keep you dry
- Easy Access: Hinged front door for simple entry and room divider for increased privacy
- Simple Setup: Can be effortlessly erected in 20 minutes
- Large Size: Measures 17 x 9 feet with a 6-foot 8-inch center height
This Coleman WeatherMaster 10 is a cool mix between a cabin tent and a tunnel tent. It’s really tall and has steep walls, kind of like a cabin, but it also has a curved shape like a tunnel. The rain cover is small and only covers the top of the tent.
It has two doors, and one of them is a hinged door that opens like a regular door! Both doors have small awnings, so you can keep them partly open even when it’s raining. There are also lots of mesh windows to let in fresh air, and two of them are angled so they can stay open even in the rain.
The tent can handle some rain, but not a downpour. The floor is designed to keep water out, though. With all the mesh windows and the big mesh ceiling, this tent is best for summer camping. It wouldn’t be very warm in cold weather.
Setting up this tent is pretty easy, especially with two people. It takes less than 30 minutes, and everything is color-coded, so you know exactly what goes where. It weighs about 31 pounds and has 140 square feet of space inside.
Final Thoughts
This list gives you a good idea of the different tents with hinged doors that you can buy. I tried to include lots of different types and sizes, but there are a few others out there too. For example, you can find the Coleman WeatherMaster tent in other sizes besides the one on this list.
No matter what kind of weather you’re expecting on your camping trip, there’s probably a tent on this list that will work for you. Most of the tents are made by Coleman, and they are usually very affordable. If you want to learn more about any of them, just click the links!
