The Vango 5-Person Odyssey Air 500 Tent is a well-made 3-room family camping tent with inflatable beams rather than traditional poles and 15 square meters of space for 5 people.
Key features and advantages
- The use of air beam technology.
- Three rooms.
- “Lights out” style.
- The setup is simple.
What is the nature of this tent?
The Odyssey Air 500 is an inflatable tent with air beams rather than traditional poles. Vango was most likely the first company to manufacture such tents long ago. So you get three beams and a pump, and two people can set it up in about eight to ten minutes.
Because the tent is not self-supporting, the first step is to stake its corners to the ground. It should be noted that this tent should not be confused with another of the same brand and name, the Vango Airbeam Odyssey Air 500 Villa Tent.
Lights out design: Vango’s term for tents with a dark rest (or dark room) design. It implies you have an outer water-resistant shell tent and a smaller inner cocoon area of darker material. When you fully enclose the tent, the glare is reduced, and you can sleep longer in the morning.
Hybrid single-double layer structure: The tent has a hybrid single-double layer framework in the sleeping area, with the inner tent attached to the outer shell. The sitting zone has a single layer of construction.
Tunnel type: The tent is supported by three pre-angled air beam archways, which give it a tunnel persona and a high ceiling in the more significant part of the tent, measuring 76.8 inches (195 cm).
3-Room tent: The sitting and sleeping zones are the two primary components of this three-room tent, as shown in the floor plan below. The second type has a divider that allows you to divide it into two sections, one for two people and one for three. You have three units in total.
Who is it intended for?
Sizewise, The Odyssey Air 500 has a stated occupancy of 5 people. So, look at the floor plan to see if this is sufficient:
The floor area is 160 ft2 (14.88 m2), which equates to 32 ft2 (3 m2) per person. As a result, this is a very reasonable number, and the tent can hold 5 people. The large sitting area contributes significantly to its livability.
Seasons-wise, The tent has a high water-resistant evaluation of 4000 mm and is suitable for all seasons. Again, this is a very remarkable number, indicating that the tent is kept. This is a 3-season tent designed by a Scottish company, so imagine how they know what real rain is like.
The tent’s layout and construction make it unsuitable for hot climates. Some people have complained that it is too hot in it; they did not conduct a thorough search and did not read about the tent’s features. However, it will be an excellent camping tool in a cooler and wetter environment.
The tent is ideal for groups and parents with children. The sitting area is a convenient place to organize camp life.
The weight and packed size are such that it can even be transported on a motorbike. In any case, this is a camping tool designed for locations with motorized access.
Materials and structure
You’ve already seen the floor plan and the layout of the rooms. To emphasize, you have two doors, one on the front and one on the side. Unfortunately, the latter lacks mesh; I cannot understand this logic.
The sitting room has a floor, but it is not sewn in; it is linked. This implies that you can take it out whenever you want to clean it or don’t want it in the living room. The inner tent (the sleeping area) is wholly floored independently, with a bathtub floor, making this a tent within a tent. It’s worth noting that the Capri 600 from the same brand has a sewn-in base.
The divider in the sleeping zone can be toggled to provide some privacy when needed, but it can also be rolled away when not in use. The two inner doors are partially mesh, so you receive complete insect protection in the sleeping area, and ventilation should be adequate. As previously stated, this is a “lights out” zone so that you can sleep during the day.
The photos above show that the sitting room has three windows with PVC translucent panels. This relatively closed space has little mesh, but a vent is beneath the large window.

There are also a few smaller storage spaces and a lantern hanging point. The tent has a patented Tension Band System (TBS II) that stabilizes the tent in adverse conditions such as strong and changing winds. The bands are tensioned and fixed to the pole at three points to reduce sideways movement. In calm weather, you can stow it away; the straps have buckles, as shown below.
